It's #FunFactFriday 🚆Let's talk #train #emergencies 🚋

Did you know each crossing has a unique crossing identification number?

Each crossing also has the 24-hour emergency number located on signage close to the tracks.

This information is imperative in case of emergency.

Emergency situations that warrant calling can include:

- witness to derailment

- becoming stuck on the tracks

- having a load / cargo fall off on the tracks

- witness to any large foreign objects on the tracks

- witness to any suspicious package on the tracks

- witness to personnel attempting to self-harm on the tracks

It is good practice in Canada to have the emergency numbers for CPKC, VIA Rail and CN Rail in your emergency contact lists, just in case.

These numbers are as follows:

CPKC - 1-800-716-9132

CN Rail - 1-800-465-9239

VIA Rail - 1-888-641-2177

There are around 14,0000 public and 9,000 private grade crossings along more than 40,000km of federally regulated railway tracks in Canada.

‼️If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, get out of your vehicle, call the rail owner emergency number and call 911. Should the train be approaching, move 30m away from the track and towards the direction of the oncoming train (upstream) to avoid being struck by debris.

⚠️Remember, trains can take up to 2km to come to a stop.
